Casual Opportunities Available

Although we are in need of several full time staff to carry the massive workload, we seldom have the kind of money rolling in that would cover such wages. However, we do have part time opportunities that come up from time to time for which we can offer compensation. If you are interested in any of the positions listed below, please email us some details about yourself to express your interest. We might request a resume or phone you to have a chat. Please be sure to include the following information in your first email:

  • name and mailing address
  • position you are interested in
  • why you are interested in the position
  • if the position requires experience, what is your relevant experience
  • your availability (days, times you can work)
  • what transport you have available (your own car, bus, bike, parents drop you off and pick up)

All positions are located at our premises in Mooroobool and are covered by WorkCover insurance. When wages are sufficient, tax deductions and super contributions are applied. Wages are paid by cheque so the employee should have a bank account and will need to fill out the usual tax file/employee forms.

Newsletter Editor and Membership Servicing

We need a person who can work sporadic hours to produce our quarterly newsletter using Pagemaker and Adobe Distiller. This is an 8 page item which will be emailed as a pdf or sent as a hard copy to members who do not have email. Ideal for a student interested in journalism or the environment. Good writing skills and attention to detail important. This position might also be involved in processing incoming memberships and renewals and sending out monthly notices to members about to expire. The work is done here in our office so you must be based in Cairns or drive to Cairns regularly from the surrounding area.

Driver

Our group will need to relocate at the end of our current lease but our Curator does not drive and is unable to get out to look at potential properties. We need someone with a reliable, economy vehicle to make some afternoon trips with the Curator. A small wage and petrol will be provided and we would prefer an unemployed person who has recently arrived in Cairns (this will be a great way to learn your way around quickly as well as give you a little pocket change at least while you're looking for work!).

Tank washing

This job is suitable for high school students as well as adults. It is a simple job but there is a lot of it! We can't receive any frog or tadpole without having a disinfected tank to keep them in, so washing up is a critical function here. Hours are flexible but afternoons are preferred. This is particularly suitable for someone in school who is looking for a very small amount of hours just to bring in some packet change. We use a variety of chemicals and provide gloves and face shields but it would be advisable for allergy sufferers to give this one a miss!
